Namaste and Welcome to Paaro!

I'm Deepyanti, creatrix of Paaro.  I was born and brought up in Jaipur, India, but have spent almost half of my life abroad in different countries. I didn’t realize how important home was until I had finished my PhD at the University of Cambridge in England and come to the United States for a post-doctoral fellowship in Austin, Texas. After finishing the fellowship and landing my dream job, I started feeling the pull of home and a desire to re-establish my roots even half a world away.  I practice cultural traditions like yoga and am a deeply spiritual person, but I wanted something that embodied the look and feel of home - something that could evoke the warmth and care of my youth. My uncle had owned a hand-block printing factory in Jaipur when I was young, and I began to think about how gorgeous the fabrics were - vibrant, unique and special. Just like home. The hand-block printing process starts by carving out the design in a single block of wood using chisels and other tools. Depending on the complexity of design, more blocks are carved. Each block stamps one single color onto the entire swathe of fabric before moving on to the next layer of design and color, which beautifully aligns to the preceding layer. Small imperfections are intrinsic to this hand-made process and add to the charm of this vintage art. I love that the process of making these hand-dyed, natural fabrics is a slow one. In today’s world of fast fashion and disposable culture, this practice feels like a warm hug and a long conversation over tea.  When I visited Jaipur a few summers ago, my heart sang as it witnessed the same tender care being poured into each piece of hand stamped fabric that I remembered from childhood. I knew that this was how I wanted to bring home back with me to the United States. This was how I wanted to share a little bit of who I am and what I love. This was how Paaro was conceived. Paaro is the nickname of the Goddess Parvati, the embodiment of love, beauty and power. She is the mother goddess, wife of Lord Shiva and a symbol of devotion. At Paaro, we show our dedication to our planet by being small batch, fair-trade and sustainable. From the intricate carving of wooden blocks to the natural dyeing process, every detail is infused with the warmth and magic of my hometown. Thank you for coming with me on this journey back home. I hope your new accessory evokes a sense of comfort, beauty and connection as I invite you to also Bring Home With You! Love, Deepyanti
